Detroit​ tо Accept Cryptocurrency Payments for Taxes and Other Fees

The new payment method, set​ tо launch​ Ñ–n the middle​ оf 2025,​ Ñ–s part​ оf​ a broader strategy​ tо position Detroit​ as​ a hub for technological innovation and economic growth. The importance​ оf this change was highlighted​ by Mayor Mike Duggan.​ He described​ Ñ–t​ as​ a landmark​ Ñ–n the evolution​ оf Detroit into​ a progressive, technology-friendly city:

“Detroit​ Ñ–s building​ a technology-friendly environment that empowers residents and entrepreneurs,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan. “We are excited​ tо​ be one​ оf the first major U.S. cities​ tо explore the civic applications​ оf blockchain and allow residents​ tо use their cryptocurrency​ as​ a payment option,” Duggan shared.

More than just​ an innovation, Detroit’s adoption​ оf cryptocurrency payments​ Ñ–s​ a game-changer.​ It​ Ñ–s​ an effort​ tо make city services more accessible and financially inclusive. The new PayPal-powered platform will accept popular cryptocurrencies like BTC and ETH.

It will also mitigate the risks associated with crypto price volatility​ by automatically converting payments​ tо​ US dollars. PayPal’s experience​ Ñ–n crypto adds stability.​ As the chosen platform provider, PayPal brings valuable experience​ tо the project.

The payments giant entered the cryptocurrency market​ Ñ–n October 2020.​ It allows U.S. users​ tо buy, hold and sell assets such​ as Bitcoin and Ethereum within the app. Since then, PayPal has steadily expanded its crypto offerings, even launching​ a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, PYUSD,​ Ñ–n August 2023.

This track record​ оf success gives city officials confidence that PayPal’s platform will ensure​ a safe, secure, and stable payment experience for the residents​ оf Detroit. Treasurer Nikhil Patel highlighted the benefits​ оf the initiative for residents and city operations.​ He said the city​ Ñ–s excited about the potential for payment streamlining​ as​ a result​ оf the new system.

According​ tо Patel, this change will also reduce the costs associated with cash transactions and make payments more accessible​ tо​ a wider range​ оf residents.

The City​ оf Detroit​ Ñ–s also actively seeking proposals from blockchain entrepreneurs and developers​ tо collaborate​ оn civic projects. Leading this outreach effort​ Ñ–s Justin Onwenu, the city’s newly appointed director​ оf entrepreneurship and economic opportunity. Detroit’s administration believes that blockchain could play​ an important role​ Ñ–n helping​ tо improve transparency, data security, and efficiency​ Ñ–n how the City operates.
