Worldcoin Arrives in Colombia, Driving Identity Verification Worldwide
The cryptoproject announced that biometric scanning activities are already available to all World ID users in the cities of Bogota and Medellin, according to the press release.
Worldcoin, the popular project co-founded by Sam Altman focused on human online authentication through iris scanning, announced last Thursday through the social network X the launch of its operations in Colombia.
At the moment, only ten locations will be available with iris scanning machines, called “orbs”, six in Bogotá and four in Medellin.
However, by stating that “more orbs are coming,” the Worldcoin project has stated that it will increase the availability of these biometric devices. It should be noted that this initiative is part of Worldcoin’s mission to create a decentralized digital identity platform that can be used globally.
In addition, Worldcoin pays 10 WLD for an iris scan, currently about $46. It also offers periodic bonuses to users who have provided their biometric data through the “orbs” located in other cities around the world.
“The Worldcoin community aims to create the tools humanity needs to prepare for the age of AI by building the largest privacy-preserving digital identity and financial network to enable digital inclusion for everyone, including the more than 4 billion people who currently lack a digital identity and have limited access to the global economy. Worldcoin does not pretend to know who you are; it simply recognizes you as a unique human being, an increasingly important distinction as AI advances,” said Martin Mazza, Regional Manager for Latin America at Tools for Humanity (TFH), a global technology company and partner of the Worldcoin protocol.
World ID verifications involve scanning an individual’s iris to generate a unique identifier to ensure that the person is indeed human. According to the initiative, this system is designed to address growing concerns about fake identities and bots on the web3.
Worldcoin and Proof of Humanity: The Future of Digital Identity Verification in Latin America?
The concept of digital identity verification proposed by Worldcoin is gaining ground worldwide. As a result, several countries and organizations are exploring similar technologies to improve online security and combat fraudulent activities.
According to experts, the adoption of biometric verification systems such as World ID’s is considered a “critical step” in driving the adoption of web technologies3.
In particular, the popular Worldcoin (WLD) token ranks 83rd in market capitalization among the more than 10,000 cryptocurrencies listed on CoinMarketCap. In addition, Worldcoin announced in April that it had reached 10 million users and 70 million transactions.
On the other hand, Worldcoin noted that surveys conducted in Latin America by Tools for Humanity, a partner of the company, “show growing support for Proof of Humanity” in Latin America.
“Seventy-one percent of the 1,100 Colombian respondents said they are at least somewhat concerned that more persuasive online bots will lead to higher levels of fraud and misinformation,” Worldcoin said.
Moreover, the company also indicated that 63% of Colombian respondents “feel at least somewhat concerned that AI models will make it increasingly difficult to distinguish between content created by humans and content created by bots.” Similarly, surveys conducted in Peru showed that 90% of 800 respondents want technological solutions to distinguish humans from bots online.
Today, Worldcoin’s expansion into Colombia marks an important milestone in its mission to provide a decentralized and verifiable identity solution, and with increasing support, the Worldcoin project is poised to play a key role in future digital identity verification.
